Embrace Change

Change can sometimes be difficult and a little intimidating but the use of augmented reality as part of your marketing, sales and even training efforts is rapidly becoming main stream.

One of the most confusing concepts to grasp is the difference between virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). With virtual reality, you wear a headset that covers your eyes and allows you to enter and interact within a completely synthetic world.

With augmented reality, you also wear a headset, but you see through the glasses where 3D digital content is superimposed onto the real world. You interact both with the 3D digital content and with the real environment – creating a true mixed reality environment and an immersive experience.

AR is now being used in every industry from architecture and construction to trade show booth design and enhanced retail shopping experiences. Use cases are endless and adaptable. Everything from training manuals to a presentation of a building infrastructure to the introduction of a new piece of equipment at your trade show booth can be accomplished with the use of augmented reality.

Imagine, as a construction or architect design firm that you have the ability to present a design or construction change as clients walk through layouts, pick their finishes and request changes. Collaborate in real-time (both locally and remotely). You can design smarter, more efficiently and control costs while you keep everyone on the same page.

We have the ability to hybrid render and visualize large, complex, 3D models. Sound interesting? Contact us to find out how makeSEA and the Magic Leap technology can work for your business.

This is why we share our designs!

We recently heard from Manes Cabanas, Associate Professor at the Universidad de Oviedo in Spain. He has used the makeSEA brushless motor as a teaching tool for his students in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. He is using the project as a way to teach the theory of design and control of this type of motor.

For our Spanish speaking members he has created some interesting videos of the Project Overview, Winding the Stator, and using and printing with ProtoPasta ferromagnetic filament.

Is 3D printing good or bad for construction jobs?

Now You can now 3D-print a house in under a day

I love this discussion thread about the recent article by Mike Murphy at QUARTZ on 3D printed houses/structures and the impact of these emerging and potentially disruptive technologies.  There is a lot of concern for the future of the construction industry and jobs, which is understandable.

I live in California, where it costs more in materials and construction to frame a house vs. whole finished properties 5x in size in some other states. That means most of the budget goes into permitting, special materials and expensive and inefficient construction techniques - things that eat money otherwise spent on quality finish and detail by skilled professionals.

In a market like ours, what I believe this technology will allow for, assuming it nets out more cost-efficient, is more spending on finish work, professional carpentry and finish skills, vs. costs dictated by construction standards and code requirements. It will also demand a whole new class of labor skills to operate the equipment.

I predict the savings will be to the benefit of the home owner - and the quality of the result both structurally, and aesthetically - and not necessarily at the expense of skilled labor. Traditionally speaking, new technologies in construction techniques have fed the job market, not squashed it.

What do you think?

Move over Moore . . . there's a new law in town!

According to this article by Clive Thompson of WIRED Magazine, there is a new law in town:  Lass' Law.  Moore's law has accurately predicted the increase in computing capacity of chips for the past five decades.  Now, Lass' Law predicts to do the same for Fab Labs.

Clive states: "If Lass’ law continues, custom fabrication will explode. In roughly a decade we will have a million fab labs. In 30 years it will be a trillion; they will be as omnipresent as the electronic devices currently scattered around your home."

Yikes!  That means a lot of intellectual property floating around to track for attribution.  makeSEA is designed specifically so that independent designers can share, sell, and track their intellectual property among a trusted community –including fab labs in meatspace. makeSEA protected projects can be managed privately, shared among private teams, or the exposed to the world - you choose.

Whether you strive for Olympic gold downhill skiing, or couch-surfing, it’s easy to understand why 3D printing makes a difference - remember, this technology is on it’s way to your living room. Read the full article here.

Innovate

At makeSEA we're all about innovation. Through the process of change, alteration, transformation and metamorphosis, using new methods and creativity, that new or improved products can evolve from an existing idea.

Stephen Coyle, a makeSEA member, is experimenting with Christoph Laimer’s 3D-printed Halbach Motor design (/makesea/1gt) to see if he can get it to generate more power. Stephen is casting the core of the motor using his 3D printed parts, a propane foundry,

and scrap metal.

You can check out Stephen's progress here: https://imgur.com/a/jhpfE and look at the comments on the Halbach Motor project for more insights. Stephens’s goal is to produce enough power with the motor to use in his water-jet-powered kayak project.

There are many 3D printed projects on makeSEA and many more to come! Become a member and “innovate” your next idea!
