Architecture, Design and AR

Recently I made a move to another state and in the process decided to have a small house built rather than rent or buy something I would need to put significant money into immediately. The experience wasn’t bad—but many times I really wished I could see the progress on the build in a way that would have helped me envision the final product more realistically.

As it was, I had to rely on photos and emails and phone calls from a third party who had my interests at heart! Ok, so this house isn’t a custom build but it made me think of how great it would have been if I was working with an architect or designer to be able to collaborate with him/her and to have the ability to visualize and experience the project as it progressed. It would have been so satisfying to be able to see how the build would look on the site I had chosen and to walk through the floor plan to get a better sense of the feel of the space.

Not surprisingly all of this and more can now be done with augmented reality (AR). Seeing a 3D model in context greatly assists in space planning and design visualization. Once confined mostly to large architecture, engineering, and construction firms with large technology groups AR is now available to everyone. Beyond visualization, AR can help the architect and the builder collaborate on change requests by the client and help the client and design team resolve any conflicts before the final sign off. With collaboration comes the potential to save time and costs as you capture and address the problems before the project is completed.

With the use of AR clients will be blown away by the fact that they are looking at and walking around and through a 3D model of a future-space—all while being firmly in the present.
